The Student Leadership Institute at Brookhaven College recently held a lecture for students about resumes, cover letters and interviews called "Presenting Yourself."
"What we do is help you with anything career related," Lisa Miller, director of the Career Center, said. "Whether it is figuring out what you want to do or finding a new job. We'll help you."
These services are free to registered Brookhaven College students.
Miller said the top skills potential employers are looking for is communication, leadership, problem solving and teamwork. She said these are the areas to emphasize in a resume or interview.
Miller said a resume and cover letter are the written forms of communication and the interview is the oral form in the application process. Miller advises students to use these opportunities to demonstrate strong communication skills.
Miller has some tips for creating a strong, professional resume that is easy to read:
-Because people read left to right the important information, job title and company name, should be located on the left. While less important information should be on the right side of the page.
- Do not abbreviate, it looks more professional.
- Great experience can justify a second resume page.
- Do not put 'references furnished upon request' it is outdated.
- A GPA of 3.5 or above should definitely be on the resume.
- Try to add something unique that will catch attention.
Miller cautions students to be careful when trying to stand out. She said gestures like gift baskets are not a good idea and can make the candidate look desperate. "You don't want to look like you don't have the skills, and that you can't sell yourself on your own merit," Miller said.
Miller said a cover letter is professional and demonstrates extra communication. Tips for cover letters from Miller:
- Address the cover letter to the employer, if possible.
- Put the same heading and font on the cover letter that is on the resume.
