At the Courier, anytime there was a question about a facilities issue Jim was the first person we contacted. He could always be relied upon to give honest and accurate information and was easy to talk to. We will miss him.
Dr. Sharon Blackman, president of Brookhaven, and George Herring, vice president of business services and Dwyer's supervisor, offered words about Dwyer.
Blackman said: Jim's passing is a great loss to Brookhaven and the DCCCD. Jim was highly respected and well liked by the members of the Brookhaven family. There is no one on this campus that knew the details and physical infrastructure better than Jim. He played an integral role in our bond construction project and his leadership in this aspect of the work will leave a huge void for BHC construction.
I always looked forward to seeing Jim because he had an array of hats and you never knew which one he would wear. He always had a great outlook on life and worked to be pro-active with the services of the facilities department in serving our students. One of the last actions in this regard was ensuring the campus received one of two bus shelters provided by DART as a result of disabled students' requests for a place to wait for transportation.
My fondest memory is riding with Jim in the service cart this semester as he took me on a learning tour of the college grounds. On this trip, he informed me when work was done to campus grounds, he named trees and plants, he talked about work the college was doing to clean the creek (which was something that is not required of us but he thought it was the neighborly thing to do) and we even saw one of the coyotes that day. He was truly in his element and was very proud of the campus grounds and the staff he led.
Jim will surely be missed and it's hard to think that I will not have him popping into my office for a friendly chat. Jim truly demonstrated our college mission statement "Dedicated to Student Success."
Herring said: Words can hardly describe the sense of loss we are all experiencing.
Jim Dwyer was the epitome of dedication to one's profession. The Brookhaven facilities were his life. He knew every nook and cranny of this college and took care of it as if it were his own home. He didn't come to work every day ... he came to do what he loved ... providing the students and staff with the best possible environment.
It was a great privilege and honor to work with Jim for six years. He was a friend, a confidant and an adviser. He had a great can-do attitude, which enabled him to accomplish many wonderful things for Brookhaven. I will never forget how proud he was when Brookhaven received a very rare SACS commendation for facilities. That commendation sums up perfectly what Jim Dwyer was all about: "For your commitment to maintaining and enhancing the facilities and campus environment that serve the needs of the institution and contribute to an atmosphere for effective learning."
Jim was one of a kind and will be forever missed.
