There's hope to alleviate what some students may consider drudgery in the execution of core courses. According to the Brookhaven College Testing Center, College Level Education Program testing still exists, but not at Brookhaven.
CLEP testing allows students to test out of a limited number of core courses such as mathematics and English. The tests are available at Richland College for $90.
As part of an innovative program offered by the University of Phoenix, college credits may also be awarded for prior learning through life experiences. Several programs were explained by UP representatives Kaley Young and Jesse Ogor who were at Brookhaven on Nov.14.
Young said up to 60 credit hours can be earned through the Prior Learning Assessment Program.
Students submit an essay on a particular field of subject and receive 10 credits per essay. The cost is $100 per 10 credits.
UP provides a Professional Training Portfolio recognition program. This program gives college credit hours for professional designations, licenses, continuing education, certifications, employer training and transcripts from unaccredited institutions. All college credit hours awarded by UP are fully transferable.
A bereavement essay, based on the loss of a loved one, is worth one credit hour.
UP has four local campuses where students can attend one night a week from 6-10 p.m. and complete a core class in five weeks.
These five-week classes provide an alternative for those who don't want to spend three months taking a core class.
These options make getting a degree much faster, offer flexibility and recognize the hard work students have done in their lives.
