Lim's uncle, who lives in Dallas, introduced him to Brookhaven College, and he began classes fall 2006. One of his recent activities was to participate in the Breast Cancer 3-Day, Oct. 26-28.
The Breast Cancer 3-Day is an annual event sponsored by the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
This foundation raises money to help find a cure for breast cancer. According to the Komen Web site, an estimated 178,480 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in 2007.
Of the 178,480 cases, an estimated 40,460 women will die from it.
Additionally, an estimated 2,030 men will be diagnosed and 450 will die from breast cancer.
Lim said he began his fund raising campaign two months prior to the event. Ninety-three people contributed to raise over $3,000.
He got help from Phi Theta Kappa, the honor society where he is executive vice president.
His first donor was Raci Douglas who Lim describes as his mentor.
Douglas works with him in the social science building where Lim works as a student assistant.
DeAnna Golsan, PTK president, said: "He dedicates himself wholeheartedly to whatever it is he goes after. He decided two months before [the walk] and got $3,000."
Lim said the first day everyone walked quickly, as if they were late for class.
Walkers on the second and third days were slower and slower.
He said he got to see parts of Dallas he overlooked when driving, and got to meet new people along the way.
He said he received water, food and encouragement from the cheer stands.
"They gave up their time to stand under the strong sunshine waving, screaming, dancing and clapping all day without any reward," Lim said.
Barbara Jo Kirshbaum is among the people he met. She said she has participated in this event 83 times. Her goal, according to her Web site, is to raise $1 million. In 10 years she raised $808,500.
Among the amenities provided to walkers was a performance by Crazy Dude.
He sang and danced to "I want you to want me" by Cheap Trick.
At one point, Lim said Crazy Dude took off his shirt and rocked out in a pink bra. Lim said he had fun watching the crowd enjoy the performance.
