Let's hear it for Bear's basketball. The Bears kicked off the season with a rally open to all students and community members Oct. 8 in T Building.

Normally called Midnight Madness, Fan Jam was an hour-long exhibition of the players' skills and techniques, which included 3-point shootouts, a dunking exhibition and a scrimmage between the team.

The winner of the 3-point shootout was Brad Fields. The Green vs. Gold scrimmage ended in a score of 51-50 with Green winning.

"I feel the team has great chemistry; we clicked pretty quickly and have bonded through our intense tryouts," Nosa Amadasun, nursing freshman, said. "But I am confident in all my teammates and what coach [Hurst] has in store for us."

Amadasun said the turnout for the Fan Jam was not what he expected, but is sure attendance will go up when the games start.

"The turnout was about the same as last year; I was hoping by changing the time more people would get involved," head coach Kevin Hurst said. "Although, I want to thank everyone who did come out and support the team."

Hurst said he was confident about the new season.

"We have four starting sophomores, who started last year," Hurst said. "Along with the new talent that we have, I see us going far, as long as we keep our head in the game."

Hurst said he makes sure he keeps a consistent game and tries not to let any one player get any more time on the court over another. He said he had 12 guys last year play 10 minutes or more each game, with seven of those players averaging 8-15 points per game.

Hurst said he hopes the players get more than just the skills of playing basketball this season. He hopes the players realize the game is more than just a game.

"The game is about life and how to work on a team, and the success of a team can be greater than just one person," Hurst said.

The Bears won the first game of the pre-season Oct. 15 against Parker College with a score of 132-92. The first conference game is Jan. 9 at North Lake College. For a complete Bear's Basketball schedule, students can visit the Brookhaven College Web site.
