Letter to the editor

Dear Courier:
Thank you so much for giving Scott Figuerola a voice in his editorial about atheism. Atheists are truly the last minority because we are held in such disrepute. We are ignored and marginalized by the Christian majority and are easily forgotten. I am sure that you will receive plenty of angry letters for Mr. Figuerola's opinion piece, but it is high time someone spoke out on behalf of atheists. Our country is 80 percent Christian or Christian sympathetic, and the atheist voice gets lost in that milieu. If someone admits that he or she is an atheist, people automatically assume the atheist is an amoral deviant. I certainly avoid telling people about my lack of belief. In this area of the country, being an atheist is worse than being a Democrat.
I give much praise for being brave and allowing the piece to be published. I am surprised that Brookhaven would do this. I have a master's degree from North Texas, and I never saw anything about atheism in our daily school paper. People can write all they want about racism and sexism, but when it comes to criticizing God, that's off limits.
Thanks,
Lisa Martin
