Defeated but not unsuccessful, the Brookhaven Lady Bears soccer team continues to learn from their mistakes. The Lady Bears played the Cedar Valley Lady Suns on Oct. 2 at home. They lost 0-4.
The game started fast when the Lady Suns scored within the first couple of minutes of the game, however the Lady Bears stayed confident. They defended their goal and went into halftime with a score of 0-2.
The girls seemed to return after halftime ready to play.
"To be only 0-2 at halftime was a great standing for the girls," Carlton Cooper, head coach, said. "I believe we are a solid team for a first-year program compared to other teams that have had a team for several years."
Cooper said he realizes there are still several areas of play, which the ladies need to work on, but is confident, and comfortable in the team's skill level as individual players and as a team.
Cooper said he constantly reminds the ladies to be active, not reactive to the other team and the game.
"We are playing better, but, as a team, I believe we need to work on attacking the ball and reading each other to know where we are going to pass the ball," Melissa Markham, education sophomore, said.
Markham also commented about how hard they played despite a couple of unlucky goals.
The coaches and the Athletic Director Lynne Levesque can not expect the ladies to become champions in one year; they realize that. She said it will take time.
It will also take lots of hard work from all parts: the players, the coaches and the college to support the Lady Bears.
"The soccer team is doing surprisingly well considering this is a new program with new coaches and players," Levesque said. "These girls are committed; you can tell by how well they overcome all the bumps which have been placed before them."
The Lady Bears are now 1-11 in conference and headed to the second half of the season, which starts at 4 p.m. Oct. 9 at home against the Richland Lady Thunderducks. For the full schedule of games, times and locations students can check out the Brookhaven Web site.
