I'm not what you would call sports savvy. Sports talk goes over my head, but recently my husband started teaching me about football. First down, line of scrimmage, field goal: it all makes my head hurt trying to keep it straight.

But football is something my husband loves (especially the Dallas Cowboys and the Texas Longhorns). So being the good wife that I am, I try to understand the sport.

I'm not totally clueless about all sports. I love watching and playing tennis. Some people may argue that tennis is not a real sport, and all one does is hit a little-yellow ball back and forth.

Personally, I don't think football is much of a sport.

The players spend all their time running up and down a field trying to hold on to a ball. It's like a big game of keep away.

My husband has this idea that by the end of this football season he will have turned me into a fan.

I don't see that happening because every time he tries to explain something to me, he sounds like the adults in the Charlie Brown movies.

He has the same idea about baseball. Baseball is a little easier to understand than football, but I don't like watching it either.

I try telling him that he is just going to have to face the facts; I'm not a sports fanatic like he is.

More times than not we end up watching TV in two different rooms. Since I have a 7 year old who watches TV upstairs, I end up watching kids programming. But anything is better than having my husband try to school me in the wide world of sports.

I'm not saying all sports are bad. It's just when you don't understand something it can be difficult to watch, especially if it doesn't make any sense. Perhaps someone should write a book called "Sports for Dummies." Oh, wait they have.

My poor husband gets frustrated with me every time I ask him to explain something to me. He just lets out an exasperated sigh and tries his best to explain what's going on. I know it has to be irritating for him.

So here I am trying to understand sports that make no sense to me for the sake of having something in common with my husband.

Perhaps one day the wealth of information my husband keeps dishing out will take hold in my brain and I'll be able to understand why he loves sports so much.
