"Reduce, Recycle and Raise Awareness" are the three R's in the mission statement for the new Green Team at Brookhaven College.

The Green Team is a faculty and staff organization that seeks to find alternative ways to recycle and make a positive effect on the ecological environment.

Julie Hanson, school alliance coordinator in outreach services, said the Green Team was started because some faculty and staff on campus wanted an official recycling program. Hanson said Tim Miller, recycling coordinator, is currently securing recycling zones at Brookhaven. He said these zones will provide everyone on campus with a drop place for paper.

"As an employee at Brookhaven, we're going to make recycling happen," Hanson said. "We are going to establish recycling zones and we are going to promote an environment of sustainability."

Hanson said there are several ideas the Green Team has for this year but nothing is certain besides recycling. Hanson said she wants to involve students.

"We are looking to invite any other student organization to join forces with us," Hanson said. "We are trying to include a community of students, staff and faculty."

Hanson said one of the benchmarks of success will be the pounds of paper collected. She said in the past, trash has been thrown in the recycling bins so there needs to be a shift in thinking to be more mindful in what is done with trash. Eventually cans, glass and other recyclable materials will be included in the program.

To raise awareness, the Green Team is presenting a speaker on "The Changing Debate on Global Warming" at noon Oct. 24 in K234.

Hanson said she has set personal goals at home to reduce her families' carbon footprint. She recently stopped using paper towels, which was difficult at first. She said she bought a bundle of washcloths and thought she wasn't going to be able to stick to this personal goal but has not yet bought paper towels.
