The new Brookhaven College Student Government Association officers were announced at an induction ceremony and meeting on Sept. 25 in S204. Yasaman Contractor, BSGA faculty adviser, appointed the positions of historian and parliamentarian.
The week of Sept. 10-14, students running for office campaigned on campus for student votes and officer elections were held Sept. 17-21 in the S Building lobby.
Any student can join BSGA and become more involved with Brookhaven activities, she said.
According to the Brookhaven Web site, BSGA is the primary voice for Brookhaven students and is a forum for student discussion on school related concerns. BSGA is also the link of communication between administration, faculty and students.
"My major is public policy and I want to be a community service director so I am really into being a part of student government," Vanessa Tapia, BSGA president, said.
The Web site also states members of BSGA attend conferences, work with legislatures, network with other students and gain leadership skills. BSGA also hosts events and fundraisers during the school year. Tapia said she wants other student organizations at Brookhaven to be involved with BSGA and invites a senator from each club to BSGA meetings.
Most of the officers are new to Brookhaven or have not participated in BSGA prior to this year.
"I am excited to take part in events this year," secretary Megan Mekins, said.
