Melody-Gamblin Bullock said she is searching for belle voci, which translates from Italian as beautiful voices. She said the voices are an untapped resource among Brookhaven college students.

Bullock said Bella Voce is the name of the new women's chorus she hopes to start on campus.

She is the music professor for the Brookhaven Choral Society and Windsong, the madrigal ensemble (12-16 voices performing 15th-17th century songs). Both of the singing groups are extracurricular activities, so Bullock said she wants to start a group that would count for Brookhaven credit.

The class can count for one credit hour or continuing education, she said. Bella Voce would function as a normal class that meets during the school day.

Auditions will be held for spring semester to see the range of voices, but not to make any cuts. Bullock said the auditions are open to any Brookhaven women students who are interested in singing. Bullock said she is looking for talent rather than music majors.

"I am looking for committed, energetic and talented people," Bullock said.

The class will work on general singing skills, sight-reading skills, musical expression, knowledge of music literature and theory and vocal production and technique. Bullock said Bella Voce will be a place for students to express themselves and improve their self-motivation.

Bullock said she has been a choral director for 15 years in the Dallas Metroplex, but this is her first year at Brookhaven. Dr. Robert Austin retired after 26 years at Brookhaven and suggested Bullock for his replacement.

Bullock said this is a project that is very important to her. The women's chorus was intended to start this fall, but Bullock was unable to get the word out to students in time.

Bullock is available for questions in her office D106 or by e-mail at mgamblin-bullock@dcccd@edu.
