Girls in Motion promotes healthy lifestyle

Brookhaven College female students can earn service learning credit and give back to local young girls through Girls in Motion, a mentoring program that pairs college females with young girls from Girls Inc. after school program.
Charlotte King, program associate for Girls in Motion, said Girls in Motion is geared to help young girls build a positive body image, bolster their self-esteem and develop positive attitudes about food and healthy eating.
Girls are brought in from Girls Inc. to Brookhaven to spend an hour every Tuesday working with a mentor. Currently there are six mentors and 12 young girls.
"We're not doing the program, but just making sure it happens," Julie Hanson, school alliance coordinator, said.
King said she got involved with Girls in Motion two years ago at Southern Methodist University. She suffered from an eating disorder and wanted to get involved with educating young girls.
"My goals for this program are that I would like to see it grow," King said. "Right now we are at maximum capacity."
Both the mentors and the girls learn something from this program. College students learn leadership skills by mentoring.
The girls are learning how to care for their bodies and how to be the healthiest they can be. King said what others think is not as important as what they think.
When the girls arrive at Brookhaven they prepare a healthy snack. Afterward there is some exercising and lots of games.
During the first week the girls learn how to take their heart rate, so when they are exercising they can keep it in the healthy zone.
"Girls learn how to have a healthy lifestyle before the hard times," King said.
