The career fair served students and citizens in communities surrounding Brookhaven and from as far away as Coppell. Former Brookhaven student Jannet Walker said she learned about the fair in the Sunday edition of The Dallas Morning News.
She said recruiters were knowledgeable and spoke about their companies and positions at length instead of just referring you to their Web sites.
Lina Gili said the fair provided a one-stop job search opportunity for herself, a full-time student and single mom. She said the convenient on-campus location and companies with flexible part-time positions impressed her the most.
AT&T, Bank of America and FedEx offered part-time and full-time positions. The jobs ranged from customer service representatives to financial consultants.
Federal and local entities such as the U.S. Army and the Plano Police Department were also present.
Entrepreneurs were sought out by Riverstone Wealth Management, a full-service brokerage firm located in Dallas. Branch manager Cameron Grizzle said Riverstone grooms new employees to develop their own financial advising business in one to two years. The employee does not incur any out-of-pocket costs to start, Grizzle said.
Dallas Area Rapid Transit and KISS FM advertised the career fair for the first time six weeks prior. Angela Shoultz, career planning placement specialist for the Career Development Center, said her plan to use public transportation and the airwaves reached beyond the Brookhaven campus.
"We're here to help students find jobs," Shoultz said. "We have a world of information … and we want to help students get started on their career path.
Other key services provided by the Career Development Center are mock interviews, job listings and resume assistance. If students are not sure about their career goals; career counseling, interest testing and a mentor program are available.
