David Newman, art gallery director at Brookhaven College, said he plans art exhibits two to three years in advance for the campus. This fall Newman has brought unique artists and their works to the Forum and Studio galleries.

Newman said he plans the theme of the show and invites the artists.

When the time comes for the exhibit to open, Newman said he sometimes works with the artists to put the pieces in place within the gallery.

One of this fall's professional art exhibits, displayed in the F Building Forum Gallery, is called "Ojo Dos," which literally means eye two. Last year at Richland College there was an exhibit called "Ojo," and this exhibit is a sequel.

In the D Building Studio Gallery, seven pieces of artwork from Kim Cadmus Owens are displayed.

She uses charcoal on paper as her medium for all of the pieces with scenes from Dallas as the central theme. She features a Dallas pawn shop.

A reception will be held from 6-8 p.m. Sept. 28 in the galleries. All of the artwork can be viewed at this time or during the galleries' usual hours from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

"Ojo Dos" has 29 pieces. The 26th piece, which is visible from the glass doors facing the J Building, is called "Chata's Myspace."

Christina Medina is the artist and curator of "Ojo Dos." On her wall of artwork, she described herself as having been a warrior in a past life. She begins by writing "Status: alive!"

She did not just write things about herself; she also spoke to her viewers.

"You have more power than you think you do," Medina said.

Other pieces of artwork have themes such as self-image, racial diversity and love of self.

Titles of pieces include but are not limited to, "Luz del Fuego Ardiente," "Dialogue One" and "Keep It Real."

Most of the artists who participated in "Ojo Dos" are professors at other Dallas County Community Colleges and Owens is an assistant professor at Brookhaven.
