But there are places that provide quality meals for a decent price. The neuhaus cafe in the Preston Royal Shopping Center provides these luxuries.
The cafe is a quaint spot for a nice morning meal. The inside resembles a candy store with chocolate covered candies in display cases and counters covered with cakes ready to serve.
The dining area is small but cozy. The wall has a beautiful panoramic picture of a night sky with city lights and a plateau in the background. There is also a flat screen TV if customers want to watch the news.
The cafe offers a variety of food for breakfast such as cereal and the breakfast burger. The menu has complete entrée descriptions and all the prices of items are listed.
The menu is intimidating at first and a bit wordy.
The seating has no particular arrangement. The waiter promptly asked for drink orders. The orange juice is served chilled with pulp, and the coffee is served in an individual coffee holder with a mug.
Most customers were small families or people leaving for their daily workout routines. The cafe has a regular clientele, which was apparent as customers walked in and the wait staff knew them by name.
The breakfast panini was delicious besides being a bit dry; it was served with a small orange slice, which was a nice colorful touch.
The panini was filled with scrambled eggs, cheese, bacon and sliced tomatoes, grilled on a piece of wheat bread.
The sandwich can also be made with fried eggs, turkey bacon, white bread or nine grain bread. Over all, the sandwich hit the spot.
The menu also has a dessert list to couple with the large assortment of chocolate covered candies. The Tiramisu, an Italian coffee liqueur dessert, was to die for. The coffee tasted a bit strong but together with the other ingredients it was delicious.
The waiting time for the food was a little long, but the food was delicious and the dessert was great. The atmosphere is quiet although the staff was hashing out their dirty laundry in ear distance of my table.
The food was inexpensive, and the experience was worth the stop for a morning meal.
The neuhaus cafe serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. They provide curbside service, breakfast until 3 p.m. and is located at 626 Preston Royal Shopping Center (northwest corner). For more information, students can call 214-739-4600.
