Is the country ready for a minority or woman president?

With the 2008 presidential elections around the corner, the Courier editorial staff feels this question is an important one to ask. It's been asked often, and there is no clear-cut answer to satisfy everyone.
With everything that's happened during President George W. Bush's administration - the war in Iraq, the constant lying and deceit and the refusal to admit mistakes - we feel the country's voters will look to completely separate themselves from his ideas.
Like any group of people discussing a certain topic, there were differences of opinion when it came to answering this question.
Some of us think the U.S. will never accept a woman president, others feel there is no reason a woman couldn't be president and still others say they would always vote for a man over a woman.
No matter what our individual opinions are one thing is certain, it doesn't matter what the country is or isn't ready for. With all the distaste left in the mouths of voters because of Bush, the next president will almost certainly be a Democrat.
The dynamics of this election, with key states jockeying for better positions in the primaries, are such that the front-runners will move forward with powerful momentum going into the actual election.
The front-runners for the Democrats are Ill. Sen. Barack Obama and N.Y. Sen. Hillary Clinton, which means more than likely a minority or woman will be the next president of the United States.
So, in our opinion, the question of whether or not the country is ready for a woman or minority president is moot. The country will be ready because it's inevitable that one of those Democratic candidates will win next year's election.
An unsigned editorial reflects the opinion of a majority of the editorial board members of the Brookhaven Courier.
