Fall 2007 marks the first year Brookhaven College will have both a sophomore and freshman class at the Early College High School.

At noon on Aug. 28 in the H Building, students of the ECHS sat in a large room eager to play games. Sky Ranch, a Christian summer camp organization, came to Brookhaven for an assembly to talk about the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

Sky Ranch presented slide shows that encouraged students to "storm through college" and "reach for clear goals and avoid distraction." ECHS students attend classes daily.

Most classes are housed in the temporary buildings behind J Building; other classes are situated in P and T buildings.

Students attend computer classes and physical education classes on campus and receive college credit for those classes. Part of the ECHS program allows students to receive an associate degree.

Yesenia Sanchez is a sophomore at ECHS who said she enjoys taking college courses and plans on graduating from the school.

After graduation she said she plans on attending the University of North Texas where she wants to major in interior design.

Jamila Taylor, another sophomore, said she wishes there were more electives and sports offered through ECHS. She said she wants to go to the University of California, Los Angeles to major in photojournalism and minor in linguistics.

Adriana Gomez, principal of the high school, said she feels having a high school on campus takes away the fear of being on a college campus.

"The high school students learn how to coexist with the college students," she said.

Gomez said students also save money on tuition because their college courses are free. She said they earn between 48-60 college credit hours.

"Students get to see what it is like to be in college before they graduate," Gomez said.
