Campus Compact grants the Frank K. Newman Leadership award each year to students who exemplify an understanding of community service and civic engagement.

According to www.compact.org, Campus Compact advances the public purposes of colleges and universities by deepening their ability to improve community life educating students for civic and social responsibility.

Roslynn Almas, international studies and journalism sophomore, was granted the award for her work with service learning and civic engagement.

"I am very excited and honored to have won this award," Almas said.

She said it was a complete surprise because she applied on a whim when visiting the office of Linus Spiller, service learning coordinator. Spiller said he received notices for two months from the national office of Campus Compact to nominate a student.

"I couldn't find a student that fit a niche," Spiller said. "They [Campus Compact] were getting hundreds of applications at the two and four-year level so if you're going to nominate somebody, it has to be someone who really stands out."

Spiller said Almas' work in service learning and civic engagement wouldn't have been enough to win this award, but her volunteer work at the Stew Pot in downtown Dallas set her apart from the rest of the nominees.

Almas said: "The Stew Pot has several community programs implemented that assist the homeless and those in need. I worked with the Venturing Crew Scouting Program targeting at-risk inner-city teens."

She said the program is a year-round assembly that includes extracurricular activities, fellowship and a college scholarship incentive program for the students who meet mandatory requirements.

Spiller said the scholarship is worth $10,000, which includes half from Campus Compact and the other half from Brookhaven. He said Almas has to participate in a six-month mentorship plan with Spiller to complete the scholarship guidelines.

"We're going to use her on both sides of the program; service learning and civic engagement," Spiller said. "She will lead a delegation of students to do weekend work at Stew Pot since she's familiar with it [Stew Pot]."
