Two years ago when I registered at Brookhaven I never realized how important it would become to me.
Over the years I have had many voyages and many destinations that when my parents suggested I return to Brookhaven to work towards my bachelor's, I had mixed feelings.
I always knew I wanted to obtain a bachelor's, but I realized I would have to put other areas of my life on hold.
People always say getting back up from rock bottom is the hardest thing to do.
When I thought of my life in terms of my education I felt as if I had hit rock bottom.
After attending classes at Brookhaven, receiving many awards and seeing my writing in the Brookhaven Courier, I realized life wasn't about finding oneself but rather about creating oneself.
First, I must say without the help of my family I would have never had the faith to believe I could actually accomplish this feat.
At Brookhaven, I have had some amazing professors who I would like to thank for enriching my life and teaching me how to think. I feel education truly separates people and I feel it is an honor to be taught by them.
To my journalism advisers, Larie Engles, Wendy Moore and Dr. John Neal, I sincerely appreciate everything they have done for me over the years. They taught me to seek out and report the news no matter how far it is buried.
To editors, Charity Allman, Scott Figuerola, Angela Shoultz, Nadia Galindo, Shreeya Rana and Chris Vivero, working as a team on a daily basis has definitely made me appreciate what we do more. We came together and created a great paper. Good luck to all of you.
To the staff, thank you for your dedication. Everyone has contributed to the success of the paper.
In all my roles at the Brookhaven Courier, I will always treasure the memories from the newsroom. I would also like to thank all the people who have contributed to any story I have worked on. I truly enjoy talking to people, hearing their stories and writing them down.
I want to thank the administration, Dr. Sharon Blackman and her staff for keeping the lines of communication open between the college and students.
I would also like to thank staff members Renee Bader, Linus Spiller, Lynn Tankersley and Camile White who have provided me with guidance and have influenced the way I see the world.
One of the first stories I wrote for the Courier led me to the Student Programs and Resources office where I was first introduced to student government and Student Leadership Institute.
This year has been an incredible experience for I have had the ability to work with so many extraordinary students in classes and through many organizations I am in.
To Marcelo Bohrt-Seeghers, Norma Broussard, Cornelius Caldwell, Christina Garza, Megan Gehl, Erika Gonzalez, Chris Hook, Beryl Moyanah, Janet Pascau, Carmen Perez, Wilson Rodriguez, Chelsey Smith, David Sublett and Rachel Walters, thank you for sharing your lives with me and for making my experiences at this college a journey and not just a destination. -30-
