The Urban League of Greater Dallas Young Professionals will host a financial literacy workshop simultaneously at several Dallas County Community College District campuses such as Brookhaven, Cedar Valley, North Lake and Richland May 5.
The workshop, which will take place 9-11 a.m. in K122, K213 and K238 at Brookhaven, is an effort to promote financial health among people of all ages in the Dallas community. The ULGD is coordinating the event with DCCCD. Citigroup will sponsor the event.
Julie Hanson, alliance school coordinator, said, "I think it is important for anyone to attend, it goes back to community colleges reaching out to the community and helping them build their future by money management, financial health and education, which are the keys to success."
One-hundred and twenty participants are expected to attend the workshops at each college. Citigroup will provide three curricula for the event, which will focus on savings, credit and money management.
ULGD volunteers and Citigroup employees will teach the classes and recruiters will select students from each DCCCD campus to volunteer for this workshop.
Classes will include "The Cost of Cool" for youth participants who will learn how to purchase clothing while maintaining a budget.
Teenage participants will learn how to manage a credit card and build good credit history in "ABCs of Credit." Another class "ABCs of Investing," is aimed at adults.
Brookhaven Professor Onaje S. Harper helped start the workshop. Harper, along with ULGD President Brandi Richard and Terra Pierre, chair of economic empowerment committee at ULGD, planned this event.
They worked with Dr. Wright Lassiter, the chancellor of DCCCD, and Molly Bewely, DCCCD director of community outreach, to bring the workshop to DCCCD.
