The Brookhaven College Bears baseball team took the Cedar Valley College Suns at home April 6-7. The game was a pitcher's duel from the beginning as Jerry Manning threw a complete game shutout in a 2-0 win for the Bears. In the top of the eighth inning with the game tied 0-0, infielder John Irvine hit a two-run single to bring in the only runs for the Bears.

In the second game of the series, April 7, and the first game of a doubleheader, pitcher Mathew Midgett started for the Bears. In the fourth inning with the bases loaded, infielder Kody Kroll hit a three-run triple to break open the game for the Bears, as they won 6-3.

In the second game of the doubleheader the Bears blew out the Suns 17-4 in an all-around offensive effort by the team.

Third baseman, Tabor Smith, who leads the team with four home runs and is currently batting .370, said: "We are relaxing and starting to have fun. The team is finally starting to get everything together. Everybody on the team is giving everything they've got to make the playoffs."

On March 30 Brookhaven played the Tyler Junior College Apaches in Tyler. Manning started the game for the Bears and was up against Michael Wilson.

Prior to the game against Brookhaven, Wilson gave up four earned runs this season. The Bears managed to score three runs off Wilson, with two RBIs from outfielder Chad Hudson and one RBI from catcher Glenn Wilson. In the bottom of the ninth inning with the bases loaded and one out the Bears had a chance to win the game, but outfielder Brian Sexton grounded into a game-ending double play; the Bears lost 5-3.

On March 31, the first game of a doubleheader against TJC, the Bears jumped out to a 5-0 lead by the fifth inning, but their bullpen let them down as they lost 6-5. Offensively for the Bears, outfielder Eric Hanlon and Smith each contributed two hits.

In the last game of the series the Bears came out flat in a 17-6 loss. The only bright spot for Brookhaven was third baseman Ryan Wulf, who hit his first career home run after being on the team for three years.

Kroll, who leads the team in doubles with 15, and currently is batting .340, said: "We've had some ups and downs, right now we've been playing a lot better than we were at the beginning of the season. This whole season our goal was to make the playoffs; if we don't make them, it's going to be a disappointment."
