Doris Simons, Brookhaven College senior adult student, said after her first experience on the Brookhaven stage she wanted to get a sleeping bag and sleep behind the curtain.

Since then she has been in 21 Brookhaven plays.

Her favorite play to act in was "The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940," and her most recent performance was "Shakespeare in Hollywood."

Besides acting Simons takes voice and piano lessons at Brookhaven.

She is also a dancer and takes ballet at Richland College.

Simons said she is also involved in two different dance groups: the Dallas Tap Dazzlers and the Granny ACT, a hip-hop group.

The Granny ACT has performed at several Dallas Mavericks' half-time shows and was recently asked to be on "America Has Talent," a television show hosted by Jerry Springer.

Simons said she started tap about 30 years ago when a friend asked her to attend a class for moral support. She has been taking tap ever since.

She was a calculus professor at Southern Methodist University before retiring in 1989.

Simons said she only needed a mere second to adjust to retirement and that she loves dancing, singing and playing the piano now that she is not committed to teaching.

She met her husband, Ed Simons, at SMU in 1949 and married him just three and a half months later.

She said it wasn't supposed to last but four children and nine grandchildren later, the marriage is a success.

She said before marrying they sat on a bench at SMU and talked about the components to a successful marriage.

They both decided they had the components and Ed proposed to her. Later, Ed bought her a bench on the SMU campus dedicated to the moment.

Doris said she will continue acting, playing piano and singing at Brookhaven.

"You never get good enough," she said.

Once a semester, her piano ensemble has a recital and at its most recent performance the ensemble played works from Beethoven.
