For the first time in its history the Brookhaven College Alpha Delta Pi chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, received the Five Star Chapter Award, the Gold Pinnacle Award and the Texas Top Chapter Award.

The ceremony took place at the Phi Theta Kappa Regional Convention in Odessa, Texas, on March 22-24. At this event chapters are recognized for their outstanding performance and active leadership role.

Erika Gonzalez, president of Phi Theta Kappa at Br-ookhaven, said: "The Five Star Chapter Aw-ard recognizes chapters on their active roles in society's four hallmarks: leadership, scholarship, service and fellowship. Besides, we also received the Gold Pinnacle Award. This recognized chapters for increasing their membership by up to 20 percent from the previous year."

But the chapter's greatest recognition was the Texas Top Chapter Award. The award places Alpha Delta Pi in the top 10 percent of the 86 chapters in Texas, and with a chance to win an award at the international convention in Nashville, Tenn.

"We are really proud of the accomplishments of Alpha Delta Pi," Gonzalez said. "We were working really hard these past months, and now we can see that all the hard work has paid off."

Gonzalez said, the chapter had some problems a year ago, and the majority of the members resigned. She said when the fall 2006 semester started, Gonzalez and Mikala Flannigan were the only members of the chapter.

They worked to try to bring more members to the group. They put up informative fliers and posters and now 92 students are part of Phi Theta Kappa.

"This chapter was the main group that donated clothes last Christmas and we are the group that gave more donations in the state of Texas to the Ronald McDonald House," Gonzalez said.

The chapter has many projects including adopting Winn Park in Farmers Branch. Every weekend members go to clean the park, which is part of the Keep America Beautiful program. Now, they are preparing to participate in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day walk in October.

"Our team is called Brain for the Breast, and we invited everyone to participate in this life changing event," Gonzalez said.
