Students wandered around the S Building lobby of Brookhaven College, taking in the sights and sounds of the annual Career Fair April 5.

Many different companies and organizations participated in the fair such as Babies "R" Us, FC Dallas Soccer Club and the Garland Fire Department.

Brookhaven student Brian Liu came to the fair to get information on a possible graphic design internship.

"The descriptions of the internships that are available were most helpful," he said.

At the Career Fair students were also able to fill out applications for both full and part-time jobs, talk to company representatives and set up interviews with them.

Brookhaven student Demetria Hall said: "I got information for part-time employment for the summer. I was looking for something that would give me experience in my career field."

Marsina Govan, a representative from Radio Shack, said, "When looking for a job, students should consider the stability, growth opportunity and the flexibility of the job."

Merrill J. Balanciere, a recruiter for the GFD, said, "[At a career fair] I usually have 20 to 25 students come and talk with me."

He said most people want to know the requirements for being hired as a Garland firefighter.

Balanciere said GFD requires candidates to have a high school diploma and be at least 18 years old. He said many people believe they have to have Emergency Medical Services technician certification to work at the GFD. According to him, that is true in some places but not in Garland.

He said once individuals are hired, GFD pays for their training as both an EMS technician and a firefighter.

Heidi Olinghouse, representative of FC Dallas Soccer Club, said, "It is good that the soccer club attends these fairs because soccer is not as popular as football or basketball and it lets the public know that there is a soccer team in Dallas."

The best advice she said she would give someone when applying for a job is to appear comfortable and show personality.

"I think that career fairs are a good thing for students because there are so many avenues they can explore. It is a one-stop shop," Olinghouse said.
