The Atrium Gallery in the B Building at Brookhaven College hosts many different exhibitions during the school year.

This spring a student show is set up in the Atrium Gallery to demonstrate the talents of the students in the visual communications program.

"Most of the students that participated in the show were ones taking their first V-Com class," Wes Smith, instructional associate for visual communications and business studies, said. "Some of the students didn't even know how to turn on the computer when the class began."

Smith said each professor in the V-Com program chose one of their projects from the spring semester to submit for the exhibit.

Jerry Hill, professor of visual communications, had his class create a self-portrait from a photograph.

Hill said that the students brought a photograph from home or took a new one and tried to stylize it using Adobe Illustrator.

He said, "It was to stylize and interpret their personalities to show how they feel about an issue or themselves, basically something they feel important about."

Smith said that seeing their works on the wall helps motivate students to do further projects.

"It promotes competition and participation," he said. "It lets them know that they're valuable, and their work is worth hanging. It's a great learning tool because the students can see what other classes are doing."

Smith said the digital imaging class is good for students to use when entering the workforce.

"It just teaches them about design and creative ways of doing things and thinking outside the box," he said. "It's really just an example of manipulating Photoshop and learning how to use the tool."

The student show will be displayed until April 22 in the Atrium Gallery.
