"Gandhi once said, 'Be the change you want to see in the world,'" Sathianathan said.
He was recently recognized as Brookhaven College 2006-2007 Student Leader of the Year and was honored at the Amidon-Beauchamp Awards Banquet for showing active involvement on campus and in community service.
Linus Spiller, coordinator of Service Learning and Civic Engagement, said Sathianathan is very deserving of the honor.
"Praveen is rare in that he actively seeks out opportunities to be involved in the life of this campus--other students don't do that," Spiller said. "All students should get involved, even if it is in one activity."
Tell me about yourself?
I am a British citizen born in North London. I immigrated to the U.S. when I was 10 years old. I came to Dallas at the age of 14 and graduated from R. L. Turner High School.
I went to The University of Texas at Austin, and attended Brookhaven during my first summer semester. After many years of living in the U.S. and in London, I returned to Brookhaven two years ago and will receive two associate in arts degrees in mass communications, one with a focus in advertising and public relations and the other with a focus in journalism, this summer.
What does it mean to you to be named Student Leader of the Year?
It was an honor to be selected. I was very happy and overwhelmed with emotion. To me, it means I have achieved success. As the poem by Ralph Waldo Emerson titled
"Success" states, "To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived, this is to have succeeded." To me, this says it all.
What committees/organizations are you involved in?
The Brookhaven Courier, Phi Theta Kappa, Amnesty International, Student Leadership Institute, Student Government, Strategic Planning Committee and Textbook and Bookstore Advisory Committee for Brookhaven and the district.
Why are you on these committees?
I want to make a difference on campus. Everybody can have a pro-active life and stand up for what they believe.
What does Brookhaven mean to you?
It has given me many opportunities to fulfill my educational dreams. I have not only received a good foundation here, it has also given me a backbone to my life. I was able to overcome many difficulties in life here that has enabled me to become the person I am today.
Do you have any people you would like to acknowledge?
I would like to thank Larie Engles, my journalism adviser, for inspiring me to understand the importance of news and delivering the news. I would like to thank the Courier staff. They make my job as managing editor interesting. I would also like to thank the students I have met on this campus who have enriched my life and inspired me with their passion and drive.
