A committee headed by Claude Caffee, vice president of student developm-ent, planned the campaign in cooperation with the North Texas Food Bank raised around $1,800 and 680 pounds of food.
Efforts included an online donation collection system and a campus-wide donation drive and.
An earlier plan to set up a day of service, in which people ages 14 and up could volunteer to assemble meals, was cancelled due to logistics problems with the NTFB warehouse.
The total number of collected meals was calculated by considering how the food bank could bulk purchase $11 worth of food for every dollar donated.
The hour-long event took place at noon March 6 at the Brookhaven Commons Courtyard. The band Wrecking Crew, which is made up primarily of Brookhaven professors, performed several blues and rock songs at the event.
Brookhaven President Dr. Sharon Blackman said it was important for the college to get involved in assisting the community.
"We must look for community service events we can do together as a college," Blackman said.
Caffee thanked the committee, the building captains who maintained the donation sites around campus and those who donated money and food.
Scott Figuerola, Brookhaven Student Government Association president, congratulated the committee on its accomplishments and thanked all who participated in the donation process.
Jayme Ferrell, marketing coordinator of the NTFB, held up a blue backpack during her speech and explained how it could help change people's lives.
The backpacks, which contain healthy snacks such as trail mix, a granola bar, a juice box and peanut butter crackers, are part of the food bank's campaign to feed young students involved in the program, who would otherwise go hungry.
"We pack enough backpacks to fill the American Airlines Center fives times each month," Ferrell said.
Christina Garza, BSGA Region II chair and member of the organizing committee said the drive was a success.
She said, "If we wouldn't have done this, we couldn't have created so many meals for children."
