With 26 runs and great pitching from the starting staff, the Brookhaven College Bears baseball team swept the Cedar Valley College Suns in a 23-inning three-game series.

On Feb.16, Jerry Manning pitched a complete game that ended in an 18-6 win. The game was called early due to a 10-run rule that requires the umpire to call the game if a team is up by 10 or more runs after the seventh inning.

The Bears jumped out to a 14-2 lead and never looked back. The Bears were led by infielder Kodi Kroll and third baseman Tabor Smith who each had two doubles and four RBIs. Kroll currently leads the Metro Athletic Conference in hitting with a .488 batting average.

In the second game of the series, and the first game of the double-header, Brookhaven star pitcher Matthew Midgett took the mound. Midgett came up big for the Bears, pitching a no-hitter through five innings.

He pitched a complete game for the Bears, giving up only one earned run and two hits as the Bears won 4-3.

First baseman Ryan Wulf, who has been struggling for the Bears, came up big as he contributed two hits and three RBIs. Outfielder Blake Moore had a crucial two out double that brought in a run.

In the last game of the series and second game of the double-header, pitcher Aaron Lowry started for the Bears.

Lowry, in his first start of the season, had a no-hitter through five innings. He pitched six strong innings giving up only two runs. Pitcher Nick Marino relieved Lowry. He got the final nine outs of the game and was credited with the save.

Head coach Corey Thornton said he was pleased with the outcome of the Cedar Valley series.

"We did something that we have been emphasizing all season long, putting all three phases of the game together," he said. "In the games against Cedar Valley we pitched great, played good defense and the offense was good top to bottom. The team is finally starting to see the fruit of their hard work."

Thornton also attributed the team's success to good quality inter-squad play.

"During inter-squad play the team's pitching, hitting and defense all improved," he said. "The goal is to go eight and one in the next three weeks. If we do that we will be where we want to be."
