After a promising start to the season, the Brookhaven College Bears baseball team has gone from first to fifth place in the Metro Athletic Conference standings.
The Bears played the Richland College Thunderducks and the Tyler Junior College Apaches on back-to-back weekends Feb. 2 and 9.
They were swept in both series, dropping their record to 3-5 in conference and overall play.
Head Coach Corey Thornton was disappointed with the current losing streak, but was optimistic they could turn things around.
"We haven't been able to put all three phases of the game together," Thornton said. "When we hit we don't pitch, when we pitch we don't hit well, and when we hit and pitch well we don't play good defense."
The Bears were plagued by bad defense during both series. In the six games, they gave up a total of 61 runs and had trouble fielding the ball. The last game against the Apaches wasn't finished, but the Bears trailed 12-8. The game will be finished at a later date.
One of the few Brookhaven players who played well during the current losing streak was third baseman Tabor Smith.
''We win as a team. We lose as a team," Smith said. "If I am playing good and we're not winning, I am not playing good enough."
The Bears will host the Eastfield College Harvesters March 2 and 3.
With more than half to go in the season, the Bears still have a chance to make up ground on the conference leaders.
