This fall, Texans will vote in an election, which is highly publicized and torn between several candidates. In the gubernatorial election alone there are five candidates on the ballot and one write-in candidate.
In the governor's race the candidates are incumbent Republican Rick Perry, Democrat and former Texas Congressman Chris Bell, Libertarian James Werner, Independents Richard "Kinky" Friedman and Carole Keeton Strayhorn and write-in candidate James "Patriot" Dillon.
Some Brookhaven College students have already decided whom they are going to vote for in the upcoming election.
Shara Gonzales, exercise physiology student, said: "I'm a straight ticket Republican and I'm voting for Perry. I also believe Perry has done some really good things."
Brookhaven business administration student Eric Birnbaum said he had decided whom to vote for after looking at the candidate's platforms.
"I'm going to vote for Kinky, because I like his platform and he is Jewish," Birnbaum said.
Brookhaven computer engineering student Brian Hull said it was important for students to research information on candidates they were interested in.
"Just because you're registered [to vote] doesn't mean you should vote. One should know who and what they are voting for. If you can't get all the information on the candidates and make informed decisions - the purpose of voting is null and void," Hull said.
To become governor of Texas, candidates must be at least 30 years old, a citizen of the United States and a resident of Texas for five years before the election.
Duties of the office include the execution of all laws, performing all business with other states and the federal government, appointing offices, filling vacancies in elected offices, calling special sessions of the Texas legislature, setting agenda and signing or disapproving bills that are passed by the Texas legislature.
To be eligible to run for office Dillon, Friedman and Strayhorn were required to obtain signatures of 45,540 registered voters who had not voted in the March primaries.
