The Brookhaven Bears baseball team concluded their pre-conference play with solid pitching and timely hitting against Lon Morris College on Feb. 15. The Bears began their conference play against Tyler Junior College Feb.17 splitting a two-game set, losing the first game 4-7 and bouncing back with a win in the second game 7-2.
The Bears entered their highly anticipated Feb. 24 conference match-up against the Eastfield College Harvesters with a record of 5-9 overall and 1-3 in the Metro Athletic Conference.
The Bears lost 8-9 after being down 7-0 early. They came back to take an 8-7 lead and lost it late in the game. The second game resulted in a 1-5 loss.
The Bears faced a challenging start to their conference season due to five starting players being injured.
Four of those are likely not to return and play this season. Head Coach Corey Thornton said his team has played with, and overcome injuries in the past, and they will have to do it again this season.
On Feb. 27 the Bears faced the Harvesters for another match, which resulted in a loss. "It was a difficult game to pitch in because the wind was blowing out hard," Thornton said. Andrew Splawn came into the game with an overall individual pitching record of 2-1 and 1-0 in conference play. Jordan Ringstaff went three for four with a homerun and Chad Hudson went two for four with a homerun.
The Bears will face the Cedar Valley College Suns at home on March 10.
