The Brookhaven College Bears baseball team will have returning players and new faces, which are definitely up for the challenge. Head Coach Corey Thornton has high expectations for the team. Thornton recognizes that for them to be successful he will have to implement flawless game plans. He stresses the importance of conditioning and succeeding academically to the players.
With 13 returning players, the Bears expect to perform at a very high level and compete with the Division III elite baseball programs. The team has worked diligently in the off-season lifting and working out in the weight room in hopes that their hard work will be evident on the baseball diamond.
Brookhaven has a very competitive Region 5 schedule. They will have their hands full against teams like Richland College and Eastfield College who, combined, have won four out of the last five National Junior College Athletic Association titles. Brookhaven will play Eastfield, who finished with a no. 2 ranking, Feb. 24-25 and will match up against Richland, who finished fourth, on March 3-4.
The Bears' Metro Athletic Conference play will initiate on the road against Tyler Junior College Feb. 17-18 and will come back home to play Eastfield the following weekend. The Bears won against Lon Morris College 8-2, but lost 7-2 in the second game on Feb. 1.
