Being involved in any student activity takes a lot of committed dedication and responsibility. While attending Brookhaven College, students have a variety of organizations to choose from. The Black Student Organization is undergoing reconstruction and started the fall semester with academic instruction and enthusiasm about black culture.

Lamont Slater, sponsor of the BSO said: "The Black Student Organization is about coming together as one accord, a good support group for all students not just for black students, but learning about the black experience and the struggles in the black community. Students can take that knowledge going to their own communities to have more sensitivity when it comes to discussing ethnicity issues."

According to Slater there are major plans in store for BSO. The students are planning a voter registration drive and attending educational leadership field trips at Texas A&M University.

"The members of the BSO can teach other individuals what leadership is about and take an active role on what they want to accomplish as a support group. Helping others in study sessions will help build a better Black Student Organization," Slater said.

Omoregie Eke, BSO vice-president, said: "This organization is not ordinary; it's an organization put together by the students. In the past this organization failed due to the lack of interest, but this time it's going to succeed because there are willing students who want to make this organization succeed."

Students who want to join the BSO can attend meetings in B304 at 1:30 p.m. or contact Slater by email at brookhavenbso@gmail.com.
